A partnership designed to help save what matters
Millions of Australians struggle to access food every year, all while food waste is on the rise. That's why Suncorp Bank has joined forces with OzHarvest: to make a real, positive impact.
Delivering around 30 million meals and saving 11,000 tonnes of food from landfill every year, OzHarvest is the leading food rescue organisation in Australia
Our partnership with OzHarvest has resulted in more than 2,600,000 meals delivered to Australians in need.
Brooke Gibson (Suncorp Bank): Suncorp Bank is extremely proud of our partnership with OzHarvest. Today I’m going to show you what it’s all about.
Hey Celeste, how are you?
Celeste Schubiger (OzHarvest): So cool to have you here today.
Brooke: I’m extremely excited. So what are we going to do?
Celeste: You’re going to come on a van ride with us today and see what we’re all about.
Brooke: Awesome!
Celeste: Let’s go!
Brooke: Celeste, what do you love about working for OzHarvest?
Celeste: I think it’s the first company where I’ve worked where everyone shares the same values of wanting to give back and wanting to do their best at work.
Michaela Windsor (OzHarvest): At OzHarvest, we get up nice and early in the morning and our bright yellow vans leave our warehouse. They have a number of pickups from food donors like supermarkets, caterers and other hospitality businesses. They’re collecting beautiful excess food. Delicious, nutritious and fresh, it goes into our bright yellow vans and then we’re delivering it, usually the same day. Completely fresh, completely free to charities that are working to feed people in need in the community.
Brooke and Celeste: Hey Megan!
Megan (Woolworths): We’ve got lots of good stuff here today, plenty of apples, lots of zucchinis, you can make lots of good stuff out of that. Have a lovely day, enjoy!
Celeste: Thank you!
Michaela: A very small portion of the food we rescue comes into our OzHarvest kitchens and is used on programmes like Cooking for a Cause.
Cooking for a Cause sees corporate teams come in and work with our chefs and volunteers to turn that rescued produce into delicious heartfelt, handmade, nutritious meals that are then delivered to the charities that we serve.
Our partnership with Suncorp Bank is in its third year now and it’s made a truly incredible impact in helping to feed people in need.
Dylan Atherton (Suncorp Bank): We are immensely proud of our partnership with OzHarvest because it helps Australians save food, save money and save the planet.
It’s really easy for Suncorp Bank employees to get involved with OzHarvest. In fact, last year we had over 330 of our Suncorp Bank employees volunteer through the Cooking for a Cause programme.
Not just that, since the beginning of the partnership, Suncorp Bank have contributed over 1.6 million meals to community organisations across Australia.
Celeste: Hello! Good to see you. We’ve got some Cooking for a Cause meals for you.
Melinda McInturff (Yeronga Community Plus): We have lots of people who access our centre to get meals, get food from us, at all different times. It’s increased in the last couple of years more than I’ve ever seen it before. Some weeks it can be up to 200 meals going out.
Michaela: We are continuing to work tirelessly to get good food to people in need and to explore all the ways to reduce food waste right across the Australian landscape.
We’re really looking forward to working with change makers, policy makers, industry leaders, partners, and of course, our friends at Suncorp Bank to explore ways to reduce food waste and to help people live a more sustainable life.
Celeste: The amazing part is that you see the impact right there when you go and deliver surplus food to people. You see how they’re happy and smiling when we arrive with our yellow truck full of fresh produce that is nutritious, that is helping them. And that’s just so rewarding!
On the road with OzHarvest
We’re proud to be helping OzHarvest reduce food waste and provide delicious, nutritious meals to Australians in need.
Supporting OzHarvest's Brisbane community kitchen
To help reduce food waste and deliver more nutritious meals to Queenslanders in need, Suncorp Bank provides funding for the OzHarvest kitchen in Brisbane.
The kitchen space allows OzHarvest to prepare an additional 1,000 meals every week.
Suncorp Bank team members are proud to be part of this amazing effort. Our employees continue to participate in 'Cooking for a Cause' programs in Brisbane and OzHarvest kitchens nationwide.
More about OzHarvest
We are OzHarvest. We're building a sustainable food culture. A world where food is not wasted but produced, distributed and consumed sustainably. Where everyone can access a fresh, nutritious and affordable meal. It's a big job and needs change at all levels of society. From government, business, manufacturers, farmers, supermarkets, restaurants and households, it needs all of us. We got the laws changed in four different states to allow food to be given away for free without fear of liability. We've changed the way people think about food waste each year. We deliver around 20 million nourishing meals to those in need. 7,000 of tons of good quality food from landfill. Through our education and engagement programs, we've changed behaviour and shifted awareness around food security and sustainability. We've already achieved significant change and that's what makes OzHarvest the leader in this space. Because all over the world, millions of people still go hungry whilst good food has continually wasted. In Australia, we produce enough food to feed 60 million people a year but every month more than 600,000 people, a third of them children, need food relief from charities. Globally one-third of all food produced gets wasted every year. This adds up to 1.3 billion tonnes and is literally costing us the earth. The problems facing us are enormous we must be truly innovative on how we tackle them. This constant innovation keeps us front of mind and makes us a role model in the sector. We have huge goals to meet and we're always striving to go further do better and be even greater. OzHarvest is now a global leader in food sustainability. Our model has been replicated in the UK, New Zealand, Thailand and South Africa. Everyone in the OzHarvest family is on the same mission. We are so excited about the work we are doing on the ground to fight food waste. And we're excited by the many different opportunities that we have to build a sustainable food culture for the future. There are still many hungry hearts and bellies. Together we'll continue to do whatever we can to nourish our country. We are OzHarvest. Find out more at ozharvest.org.
