Don't fall victim to fake ticket scams

4 min read

As summer draws to a close, Australians are gearing up for a packed calendar of concerts, festivals and major sporting events. But alongside the excitement, Suncorp Bank is warning customers to be on high alert for scammers looking to take advantage of ticket-hungry fans.

On the rise during peak event seasons, ticket scams typically involve fraudsters advertising tickets that don’t exist, won’t scan at the gate, or aren’t valid for the advertised event or date.

From music festivals to tennis matches, scammers target fans desperate to secure tickets to sold-out or high-demand events. They ask victims to avoid official ticketing and resale platforms where checks and protections exist and instead operate through social media marketplaces, online noticeboards, or even outside event venues.

These scams are designed to exploit people who are emotionally invested in attending a highly anticipated event.

A Suncorp Bank spokesperson said scammers are always active, particularly when opportunities arise such as peak event seasons.

“With international tennis events and a number of major music acts touring this summer, scammers are actively looking for opportunities to trick people into buying fake tickets."

Tips to spot a fake ticket scam

Fake ticket scams often have the following characteristics:

    1. Sold by an unofficial seller

    2. Too good to be true prices

    3. Pressure from the seller to pay quickly

    4. Inability to verify the seller or tickets through the official provider

    5. Unusual payment methods

“Purchasing tickets directly through official sellers or authorised resale platforms gives customers confidence that their ticket is genuine and helps protect them from falling victim to a scam.”

"If a scammer succeeds in selling you a fake ticket, recovering the funds may not be possible, even with the help of your bank."

If you believe you’ve been scammed and the payment was made through your Suncorp Bank account, contact us immediately on our publicly listed number 13 11 75.
