Scams Awareness Week: Suncorp Bank urges customers to be aware of impersonation scams

3 min read

This Scams Awareness Week, Suncorp Bank is urging customers to stay alert to impersonation scams, with an increasing number of cybercriminals pretending to be trusted organisations such as banks, government agencies, telecommunications providers, and parcel delivery companies.

Scammers can impersonate trusted organisations to mislead their customers into transferring money or revealing sensitive information.

These scams may occur via phone calls, SMS, email or social media messages. Using technology known as “spoofing,” scammers can make calls or text messages appear as though they are coming from a genuine number or sender.

Just because a message appears in an existing conversation doesn’t mean it’s genuine.

If you receive an unexpected call or message claiming to be from your bank and you feel unsure, hang up, and contact the organisation directly using the official phone number on its website or the back of your bank card.

Scammers will create a sense of urgency around your actions which Suncorp Bank will never do. Taking a moment to pause, verify and think before responding can help make a difference in preventing scams.

About Scams Awareness Week

Scams Awareness Week is a national campaign dedicated to helping Australians recognise, avoid and report scams. This year, it runs from 24 to 28 August and is a great opportunity to share scam experiences, which can help others to identify and avoid scams.

In recognition of Scams Awareness Week, remember these simple steps: Stop, Check, Protect. Take a moment before sharing money or personal information, verify who you're dealing with, and act quickly if something doesn't feel right. Reporting scams helps protect both you and your community.

Anyone who believes they may have been scammed in relation to their Suncorp Bank account is urged to contact Suncorp Bank immediately on its publicly listed number 13 11 75.
