Suncorp Bank Urges Customers to Stay Vigilant as End of Financial Year Approaches

4 min read

As the end of the 2025/2026 financial year (EOFY) approaches, Suncorp Bank expects a rise in scam activity and is warning customers to stay alert to scams targeting individuals and small businesses.

EOFY is a busy time for Australians lodging tax returns, updating financial records, and reviewing investments. Unfortunately, it can also be a peak period for criminals impersonating trusted organisations in an attempt to steal money and personal information.

Scammers commonly pose as the Australian Taxation Office, government agencies, banks, or accountants. They may send fake emails or SMS messages offering “tax refunds,” requesting urgent payments for alleged tax debts, or directing recipients to fraudulent websites designed to capture login and banking details.

 Common EOFY scams include:

  • Fake tax refund notifications via email or SMS
  • Phone calls threatening arrest or legal action for unpaid tax
  • Phishing links requesting MyGov or online banking login details
  • Fraudulent investment opportunities promoted as “tax-effective” before June 30

 Suncorp Bank urges customers to:

  • Independently verify any contact claiming to be from a government agency
  • Always validate payment details over the phone when paying invoices
  • Access online banking or MyGov accounts only through official websites or apps
  • Never click on suspicious links or download unexpected attachments
  • Report suspected scams to the bank immediately

Customers who believe they may have shared personal or banking information with a scammer or have concerns they have been targeted by a scammer (even if unsure) should contact Suncorp Bank immediately on 13 11 75 so protective measures can be put in place, to the extent possible.
