Internationally renowned climatologist, Professor Roger Stone, delivered his 2015 seasonal climate predictions in Dalby last week (12 February), at the inaugural Will it rain, hail or shine in 2015 event.
Hosted by Suncorp Bank, in partnership with BMO Accountants, the free community event saw more than 100 farmers and local businesses gain invaluable insights into seasonal climate forecasting from Professor Stone as he shared his expert knowledge on climate forecasting and the profitability benefits for farmers.
“There are large benefits to be gained from seasonal climate forecasts, especially when farmers and businesses have the confidence and skills to take ownership of the science and their own management process,” Professor Stone said.
“This type of research can deliver increased profitability across the entire value chain, from farmers to exports, however the key is to understand how to incorporate the information into management decisions. This can be a complicated task, which reinforces the incredible value events like the seminar held in Dalby can deliver to regional areas.
“Queensland has some of the most variable climates on earth, which means we are rarely going to experience an “average climate year”. By being informed, we can accept and manage the challenges of Mother Nature and be in a position to take advantage of the good years and also prepare for the not-so-good years.”
Suncorp Bank Regional Manager for Central and South West Queensland, David Littleproud, said the event was a great success and well received by the community.
“Professor Stone is a highly regarded industry specialist and shares Suncorp Bank’s passion for supporting regional and rural communities,” Mr Littleproud said.
“His presentation provided guests with the information and practical tools required to understand seasonal climate forecasting, and the positive impact it can have on businesses.”
The Will it Rain, Hail or Shine in 2015 seminar marked the start of Suncorp Bank’s 2015 calendar of regional and rural events.
“The Suncorp Bank Agribusiness Roadshow series will travel through Central and South-West Queensland next month,” Mr Littleproud said.
“The annual agribusiness roadshows have been designed to provide local residents with the opportunity to engage with high calibre speakers and ask questions about how to best manage personal and business challenges, change and opportunities.”
The Suncorp Bank Agribusiness Roadshow Series will be held in the following locations:
- Monday, 23 March: Bundaberg
- Tuesday, 24 March: Mundubbera
- Wednesday, 25 March: Roma
- Thursday, 26 March: St George
